What is Software Defined Radio? What are it's types, advantages ? What is it's Scope ?

What is Software Defined Radio?

We can see that with the advancement in the technology and due to the vast growth people need to communicate in whatever form it may be like video communications, data communications, broadcast messaging, voice communications, command and control communications, emergency response communications, etc.  So to achieve this communication effectively there is a need to modify radio devices which are easy and cost effective. In this matter SDR is much beyond others as Software defined radio (SDR) technology brings the flexibility, power and cost efficiency to help make the  communications easy and cost effective  with wide reaching benefits

Software Defined Radio:

Software Defined Radio is attempting to place much or most of the complex signals which are handled in communications receivers and transmitters into the digital signal processing style. We can say that a Software Defined Radio receiver might consist simply of an analog to digital convert chip connected to an antenna which is used to decode the analog signals in the form of digital signals and all the filtering and signal detection can be done in digital domain means in an ordinary personal computer

A typical voice SDR transmitter consists of the following stages and all this parts are shown in the figure given above.

  • Microphone
  • Analog to digital converter
  • Series of amplifiers
  • Audio amplifier
  • Modulator
  • Transmitting antenna

A typical receiver would employ the following stages

  • Receiving antenna
  • Digital to analog converter
  • Speaker, headset or earphone
  • Super hetero dyne system
  • Demodulator

The main advantages of software defined radio are their interoperability as it is easy and the flexibility it provides. SDRs allow them to receive and transmit a wide range of radio frequency providing versatile interoperability.

Recent Market Report :

A study report says that United State and Europe have the majority of the market share in the global software defined radio market. United State’s JTNC program, Europe’s ESSOR program, and many other national level programs from countries such as Italy, Germany, Spain and France are adding the momentum in the European region.

Resent study says that the global Software Defined Radio Market is estimated to be $13.87 Billion in 2014 and is expected to gain a CAGR of 11.39% to reach $26.48 Billion in 2020. It means that the Software Defined Radio Market is going to the biggest technology in coming six years period.
